Removing axle from county CV joint?

    Hi all
We finally got the axles out of the front of the county (right hand short axle was broken) now we need to seperate the axle from the county CV to replace it.
Any ideas on how to do this?, or can't it be done at all??

    Thanks in advance Tim.

The manual says to hold the drive shaft in a soft jawed vice and using a soft faced mallet drive the CV joint off the end of the shaft. There is a small spring clip in a groove around the shaft end that holds the shaft in. This needs to be compressed to allow the shaft to come out.

or a Heavy duty nylon bush over the broken axle then after vicing hit the bush with the FBH.

Ive had one where cutting the axle square about an inch form the CV, drilling the center of the axle, cutting a thread and then making a puller was the order of the day after we broke the FBH.

Well we've tried everything, tried bashing it with every hammer (including a sledge hammer) we where going to try tap a thread in and make a puller but the tapper just won't do it, and just then i notices a hairline crack in the CV

    Unhappy

I have never had to belt them with a hammer to separate.Open the vice wide enough for the axle to go through with clearance. CV upwards, axle down, lift CV side about a foot with one hand and drop onto vice jaws while pulling axle with the other hand. They usually come out with the first or second drop. Maybe your expander ring has come partly off the axle groove and locked in which case it can be removed by distmantling the CV. Doesnt sound good with that hairline crack.

We started of softly doing things like you explained than gradually got harder
And ended up with the sledge hammer
The crack was there before the sledge hammer came into it

and I thought I was going to be the only one to see one of them....

can you move the axle in the CV mount at all?

if not after you get the new one do me a favor and dissect it with an angle grinder.

    cheers.
