    Thanks for the suggestion.

I held the revs at 2000 rpm and turned the steering wheel lock to lock with no change in the tune of the whine.

I have noisey bearings in my tensioners (screw driver to the ear test) but they kinda rattle rather than whine!

The suspects are 1: alternator (perhaps brushes?) 2: power steering pump 3: water pump.

The old girl is going to my friendly mechanic tomorrow for a diagnosis.

    Lay your bets......

Bearing that is mounted in the timing case - that the fan is mounted to. Mine collapsed and whined like crazy for a number of months. When it was finally replaced there was 5mm of play in the bearing.

    HI
Your water leak at the front of the block sounds like a leaking p gasket. They fit a tin one, much better than the weak paper one

I had the bearings replaced in the 2 idler pulleys (tensioners?) and the 300tdi almost sounded like a petrol.

I couldn't believe the difference it made.

    Thanks for all the posts.

    Sean
