PAS Box lash - wtf locknut!

I've just fitted a new Bilstein steering damper amongst other things and the steering is now perfect, except for the 15 odd degrees of movement of the steering shaft before the lower arm begins to even move. It is horrible to drive at 110.

What's the deal with undoing the locknut on the steering box adjustment? I can only get a short 19mm open ender down there and no amount of belting it will get it loose.

I've tried a socket from above but it's going to need at least 450mm of extension (which i dont have).

    Tips?

they get done up tight and time siezes them the answer is an impact socket and a couple of 300mm extenders. on the end of a rattle gun...

you could try heat.... but I wouldnt.

what he said and the bloke above him said

long extensions, it wont take much from the rattle gun to undo, its the hammering effect thats the key.

Joel, check the nut on the end of the sector shaft that holds the pitman arm on, these come loose and give the same symptoms.

I have had success with using a short ring spanner and levering it round with a bar from above using a handy surface like the edge of the steering box or chassis rail etc.

Two extension bars had it sorted. Pitman arm was tight thankfully.

Did 1/8 turn and it made it HEAPS better but not perfect. But I'm happy to settle for this. From what I've heard, bit apprehensive about going all the way and totally screwing the box.

    cheers!
