Hi all, I have a slightly modified 03 Td5 defender that when the revs get up near maximum through the gears I believe the rev limiter / boost controller (not sure which it has) cuts in and the engine drops to idle with a non responsive throttle pedal. I have to coast to the side of the road and turn ignition off and restart to drive away. Has anybody any ideas what would cause this problem as it is definitely not the way it should be.
Mods are - upgraded ECU, larger intercooler, larger SS turbo exhaust dump pipe, LPG injection.

Why did I stop - the first time it happened it took me by surprise and I didn't have a clue what was going on, second time I just slowed down and restarted. Been driving more conservatively ever since.

Almost certainly going into limp mode after overboosting. Does the Check engine lamp come on? The key here is to check your max boost and it should be around 20psi. The wastegate DOES get sticky on these too, and will cause the same symptoms in standard vehicles. Try moving the wastegate actuator with a pair of vicegrips, it should move OUT towards the back of the engine. It will be hard to move against spring pressure but should spring back easily. If in doubt, soaking the pivot shaft liberally with penetrants like CRC and Inox overnight should free it up. If the wastegate is free, and it is overboosting, you can adjust the wastegate by lengthening the rod a few turns to prevent it happening. Don't go too far as doing this will reduce performanceA boost gauge is a MUST HAVE when diagnosing/ rectifying these type of faults. (An EGT gauge would also be of some merit with a modded Td5...)

When my D2 overboosted due to a failed modulator, the throttle still worked but there was fuel cut-out when the boost was excessive. Does the Defender (not having the boost modulator) react differently?

Thanks for the info JC, yes the engine check lamp did illuminate. Just checked the ECU and low and behold it's well lubricated so I'm gonna have to rectify that first but I shall be checking on the waste gate while awaiting parts.

Yup, what Phil said, I believe the non modulator equipped Td5's in Defenders do this. Sometimes they will shut down to idle aswell.
Clean out the connections to the ECU and the plug at the front of the head first, there still may be a erroneous signal coming from the soaked loom plug...
