Not usually with a Direct injection diesel DB, as the combustion chamber is in the top of the piston, not the head. BUT, the exceptions are when there is enough removed from the head surface to cause the valves to come too close to a piston when opening or closing, therefore a thicker gasket may be necessary. The Tdi has 4 thicknesses available, a 1 hole, a 2 hole, a 3 hole and a no hole one. I can't remember the actual measurements ATM but they are originally designed that way for a clearance issue regarding deck height and piston crown protrudence, not as a compression increaser/ decreaser.

yeh this is was I was talking about...think the 90 had to get a 3 hole from memory......Sorry I said it probably wasn't relevant I just saw the whole head skimming and someone else suggesting that the gasket could be getting by passed or something and someone else suggesting that the heads although were torqued correctly might not be tight enough due to bolt stretch.
I was trying to put a couple of things together....I.e head skimmed, normal gasket in heads torqued down but not enough to accomidate the thou gap possibly left by the skim and allowing coolant to escape....Sorry bit of girl logic there I will keep my mouth shut :(
:oNo need to do THAT Lou, I was just using your post as an example, if you like, to bring up some info about the reasons why different thickness ones are available. Besides, My wife says 'girly logic' is more logical than mine anyday. I'm reminded of this constantly too, everytime I do something illogical, which is often:(

Hi All,
We finally diagnosed the problem with the head. Apparently there could be a crack in the exhaust valve area. Anyway I decided to not stuff around and put in a low km motor from TRS. Had the job done in just over a day and the is running sweet. I think its easier to change the whole motor than do the head!!!!
