    ZF auto shift speeds ??

    Okay....

I have just recently gotten back my much loved (by me) and much maligned (by my wife ) 98 tdi Disco after getting an exchange reconditioned ZF auto from A&B in Victoria.

The local Landie man did the swap for us and flushed the cooler and lines etc of all the old clutch and material bits from the old auto.

Problem we have now after two days of driving is the upshift spped of the auto box is about 3000rpm on a light throttle and almost 3500rpms on a heavy throttle. These seem way too high. I would've thought that 2000 - 2500 would be better for a tdi?

Now I spoke to JC about it and he suggested a few things that I had previously found during a search of the forum wisdom here. However, the shift speeds are still too high (just under 3000 at moment).

I took some photos of the kickdown cable on the fuel pump and its current settings, however I can't seem to post them here. I am taking the Disco back to Landie mech on Monday, however I would really like to resolve this sooner.

What should the shift speeds (in terms of engine rpms) be in a ZF auto fitted to a tdi 98 (series 1) Disco?

Is there a difference between the ZF boxes behind a V8 and a tdi? It appears that shift revs of 3000 - 3500 would be about right for a V8? I'm hoping that A&B haven't stuffed up and sent me a box set for a V8 and not a tdi

glad to see you back on line Goldey,,

there was another post on this recently,
my V8 will shift up to second at idle revs,,
on light throttle at around 1600 and continue doing it till 4th is reached.

The V8's shift earlier aparently due to fuel usage

Aren't these an electronic gearbox, so the shift point should largely be controlled by the computer?

Not electronic. My gearbox is hydraulic. The later series 2 Discos are electonic controlled.

I can see I'll have to persevere with the kickdown cable being the reason. Just don't want to fiddle too much, it'll jeapordise my warranty on the reco box.

The data is all in RAVE. Give all the engine speeds and ground speeds at different throttle positions.

the boxes are different but not insurmountably so.

I know you can easily bodge one to the other by tensioning up the throttle cable but I cant remember if that works if your going tdi box to a v8 or vice versa.

I suspect its in the favor of putting the tdi box on the v8.

The main difference between the Tdi and V8 box is a rubber thing built into the case to stop the vibrations(or at least limit them) damaging the internals on a Tdi box.

That and the valve body settings I believe are different.

Make sure the kick down cable isnt too tight, it should just feel like the slack has been taken up is how I was told buy my mate who worked at A&B and Mal at MP but Mal also went throught how he sets them up (the 5mm thing I have mentioned previously which others seem to disagree with).

3000 does seem very high, is it the same light throttle?

I could understand it being 3300 on heavy throttle but medium to light should be around 2500 to 2750 I think, I will check tomorrow with mine.

    ZF shift speeds

Hi You don;t mention engine type but if you have a shift/kick down cable then if ths shift cable is too tight the shift will delay, too loose will shift too early. As a good start point set the cable so you just get 'forced kickdown' as the pedal goes into the carpet. From here you can adjust the cable to cause earlier or later shift.
There could be another problem if the re-builder did not use the 'spacer jig' to locate the valve body in its correct position, not casting doubts on the builders but I suggest you ask how the valve body position was fixed??. Incorrect position has the same effect as tight/loose cable but cannot be adjusted out!. The valve body can be re-positioned with the box in car.

    Hope this helps

    Thks guys

I am taking the disco back to the Landie mech to see if he (to keep warranty intact) can adjust the kickdown to achieve a lower shift pattern. I have spoken to A&B and Bill assured me it was correctly setup (with the 3rd gear lockup as well).

Will have to wait and see after tomorrows mods.....

What revs should the ZF in 300tdi Disco be shifting at? I haven't been able to find it in my Rave info.

    Cheers
