I did add a tacho the other day to pin 19, but it has done 500km since that was done, would the crank angle sensor die all of a sudden ?

yep any sensor can just "let go" at any time with little to no warning.
some of the things that can kill them include.
the back emf of a central locking solenoid not filtering correctly and that spikes something, arcing in the starter motor solenoid, age
its my pet hate of electronic engine management, replacing a sensor is easy and usually the diagnostics tool will even tell you what sensor went and when it went (relevent to ECU hours) but you never know what killed it, did it just die or did something take it out. At least with mechanical systems you can usually identify the cause of death.
cam,
on the drivers side of the bellhousing there is a little white plastic plug with a black plug and wires going to it. thats your CAS. it wont be easy to spot as its hidden under the main harness that crosses the bell housing. eaisest way is to take the bonnet off and have a really good look.
cheers phil
yep eyeball the RAVE it might take you a couple of goes to orientate the Rave pics to the engine but its easier than me going
its on the dohicky near the main crank pully under the alternator and trying to word picture you into the correct location..
dont know about cost I havent had to replace one yet but a quick phone call to four wheel drives down in melbourne M R autos in redcliffe or even justinc (send him a PM) should be able to help you on that.
Hi, I have a spare crank angle sensor out of a D2 which I keep in my spares kit. I assume this D2 and Defender sensor is the same. You can borrow this to see if it is the problem. PM me tonight if interested as I can drop it off tomorrow.

Hi don't if this applies to yours but my TD5 Disco developed a miss that got worse as the engine heated up, I replaced filters, the air mass meter, was at the point that I thought the ECU would have to be replaced so I got the thing on a computer and it turned out the ecu was oiled up causing a breakdown in connection for the injector circuits apparently over time oil is forced down the inside of the wiring harnes that goes from the injectors to the ECU. repair was simly unplug the ECU hold it upside down to drain the oil and clean the contacts with electrical cleaner, I also changhed the Harnes in the valve cover to break the flow of oil for a while. never missed a beat since.

And the solution to this, and to my disbelief,
It is the Fuel pump... I know I wrote you all off... but I would have thought a new pump no older than 6 months old and less than 15k on it would die.
Time to cut a hole it the floor, I am not dropping the tank again, thats a pain in the ****.
Thanks again for all your support the forum is a wealth of ideas and information and people who are more than willing to go out of there way to help another person. I applaud you all.
