Question Transmission from Discovery to Defender?

Hello all. First time at posting a thread.
    Need some information.
Is it possible to put a "Discovery 2005 TD5 gearbox and transfer case" INTO a "Defender 2001 TD5"?
My gearbox in the defender is on the way out, and I saw a Discovery TD5 being wrecked. Can I use the gearbox and/or transfer case?
    Any advice appreciated.
    Thanks

Yep sure is, M R Automotive in Redcliffe have fitted the Disco2 auto into their fender 130 TD5 and it is suposed to be putting out 180KW, they use it to pull the race car around

No, it is not that simple. The R380 5spd in the disco is quite different to the defender one. In order to swap the two you will need to dismantle both, and fit the shift rods and shifter housing etc from the defender box to the disco one. The transfer cases are interchangeable, but fitting a disco case to the defender is like fitting 35" tyres. The high range ratio is about 20% taller, so will make starting off on hills very difficult. Will cruise nicely on the highway though...

Dear P&J and sorry M&D to contradict your post but answer is ...."Yep sure not"....over and above JC's "the tassie devils always 6 star advice", the disco2 ZF is a electronic not a hydraulic box ...MR would have used a "$2K bits only" Compushift as the first workaround being that a fender 130 TD5 does not have a electronic gearbox ECU. Cheers

UM sorry but did P&J not ask if it can be done and yes it can be done as to if it is an easy or dificult task and what else is needed i do not know but the "FACT" remains M R Automotive have done just this conversion

If its a manual to manual, as JC says there are a few things. Something else is that the front output flange on the transfer case is bigger on the D2, and will need to be swapped aswell.

They trying to copy me. but mine has the D1 so it is valve body controlled and has been substantialy beefed up to handle the power and weight.

    Im backing justinc.

you can do it but you need both boxes....

you take the selector mech from the deefer box, install that in the disco box and fit it up...

if you want your deefer faster but not as trucklike when towing you leave the tcase if you wish to maintain the existing characteristics you swap the tcase.

I am sorry ....over my too quick post (maybe I should ring up the phone nos of those premature message bill boards you see these days) as I just saw M&D easy peasy reference to a auto D2 box going into a defender and saw red and not the original post of manual to manual.

JC is on the money ....and M&D sorry ....but the D2 is a electronic ZF not a hydraulic box and that requires serious work around $ thrown at it like a $2K compushift to drive the gear box solonoids ....plus I think you will find MR used this as their workaround that you don't mention.

George 130 love to hear about your D1 hydraulic swap out experience

there are a few ways to auto a TD5 Defender,

    1) use a 300 disco autobox and fit a TD5 bellhousing and converter, ends up the same length as the manual coming out,

    2) take a TD5 disco autobox and rebuild it with hydraulic control

    3) fit the TD5 autobox as is and control it with the compushift

the hydraulic conversions work OK but the electronic with compushift works far better, you get what you pay for I guess.
