    Tray Mounts on Defender

Are the brackets that are bolted to the chassis to support the front of the tray normally welded as well?

The three mounting bolts have 10mm heads, so I suppose the thread is about 6mm.

Mine has three rather unimpressive dabs of weld to assist those rather puny little bolts in holding up the weight at the front of the tray.

Is that weld a LR idea or something added by the previous owner?

When I had to remove the bracket to repair the top of the bracket, I broke the welds with my bare hands.

It all looks rather inadequate to me.

I think you'll find that the front mounts for trays are Oz added, as the HCPU uses a different bracket.
Generally with the trays I've seen on 130's they don't use the front Land Rover mount at all, at least with CC's.

    maybe a pic ?

Here is a pic of the mounts.

The squares indicate where the welds are, although one is hidden behind that pipe.

The welds don't look as if they would hold much, but then neither do the bolts.

I guess what I want to know is:
Does everyone else's setup look as flimsy?
Should I replace the couple of little welds on the other bracket which I removed to repair?
Should I put a decent weld on both brackets?
Am I just being paranoid - again?

    Looks pretty weak.
The short extensions on the chassis rail are under the rear of the cab on a crew cab, and it's been a while since I looked under a single cab.
I'll have a look at a mates 110 tray back over the next couple of days and see if I can get a pic or two of Brads mounts.

from my thinking the small brackets to chassis rail (ie where the dodgy welds are in your boxes) are factory but the taller brackets with weakening holes in them are gonna be fabbed up by the tray maker.

The smaller brackets attached to chassis appear to be the same as the ones further back on a 130 that I needed to beef up a little with some plate. On my tray the Alloy C-section bolts to those lower down members.

Could be wrong in single cab world but either way Id be strengthening the entire Alloy to chassis rail connection if it was mine.

Hey mate these are the mounts on my old mans 130 Defender

They look pretty similar. He's had some decent weight in the back off that thing and they haven't broken

    Thanks for the pic.

That looks the same as mine where the vertical bracket mounts to the chassis except that yours has welds about 15 - 20mm long while the welds on mine really are just a token effort.
