Check the IAC valve on the back of the plenum, make sure it is tight, if tight, remove and decoke valve and seat in plenum, clean (with MAF cleaner or Carby cleaner) the hotwires in the small hole in upper left side of MAF, clean connection pins of MAF plug, make sure it is a snug fit, see if that helps, Regards Frank.

If its an 88 with 3.5, no IAC valve.
Maybe check the temperature sensor resistance first as this is like the choke in a carby car. It should be <400 Ohms at operating temp.
You haven't put a cool thermostat in have you? The temp gauge is just under the middle?
The cold start injector on the side of the manifold may be dribbling or the thermo time switch may have died. Maybe disconnect the injector plug on the cold start injector or/and pinch off the fuel flow to the injector.

When all else fails, check, clean and tighten all connectors and crimps in the harness. Voltage drop through poor connections plays havoc with the signals received by the control unit in any electronic fuel injection system. Can be a real PIA in some vehicles, digging out harness and connectors from their hidey holes behind dash boards and consoles.

never touched the thermostat but the gauge reads about quarter but i feel this is a good operating temp as you can feel it when you lift the bonnet but i might take it out and check, what should i have in there, ie how many degree thermostat should it be running

I think that may be the problem.
    It comes with 88C
I am not absolutely sure on the old ones but on a 14CUX the ECU richens under 80C. You could try 82 C but I eventually went back to 88C with mine.

Given the age of the car .... 21 years old ... Could be also time for the injectors to be properly cleaned

Have you tried sticking in some "fuel injector cleaner" to the fuel tank .... Try a tank and see if it perks it up a bit ..... If you do it tho .... Make sure you try it on a long distance and empty the tank in say ..... 2 days .... Don't leave it for 2 weeks ... as it is corrosive & can damage parts IMHO

only bought it a couple of months ago, it wasn't running on petrol when i got it, ( so i dont really know the car yet or much about rangies) but i found the people who put it on gas stretched the wiring harness that hard the it pulled a wire out of the plug to the A.F.M so upon shorting all there pipe work for the gas a reconnecting the 1 wire it was runniong fine on petrol, but after a couple of days my next drive was when she was blowing black smoke, only diference was first run on petrol was in my drive and cold seemed to run fine , second drive on pertol was middle of the day after she had warmed up on gas the she was idling realy low and blowing the black smoke at idle, and heaps when reving

If it had not run on petrol for a long time the injectors may be seized , and some may be open.
New injectors are the fix in this case.

The petrol side of the motor has not been used for yonks .... Possibly since the gas system was installed ... as per your comments

So there is a good chance that the fuel rail has had a build up of internal corrosion .... and now has ended up in the injectors

Black smoke = too much fuel

So if you have tested all the other suggestions

Pressure clean out the fuel rail
Clean the injectors ... or buy a set of second hand ones
