As Dave says, it isn't really necessary, it just makes the job easier.

As stated by Justin and Dave, this is not the box to learn on - these are a little complicated, especially the reshimming. Getting the gearbox / transfer out is the easy bit. As well, you will be hard pressed to recognise worn or damaged parts.
$2500 may sound a bit steep but start to buy a few gears, synchro rings and a bearing / gasket set and see what that costs. Also you will have plenty of trips to and from the parts supplier.
I speak from experience as I replaced a main shaft in an R380 out of our '93 model some years ago and will never want to do it again.
