None of the australian vehicles had 24v starters as far as I know. we kept to 12v for the vehicle electrics.
do you have some pics of the started and the hole so we can see what the difference in size is and what they may be from?
Well things were progressing well with getting the old 2a ambulance going,... gearbox is in, carby cleaned and set up. Cleaned the starter up and tried to put it in and find that the housing has a larger hole than the starter, and that there are three mount holes for the starter flange. The manual and online parts catalogue are no help, so does anyone know why the difference? I have two spare clutch housings with the right size starter mounts but don't want to have to pull everything apart to change them. I'm hoping it isn't a 24volt starter, or some such thing. you have the diesel's bellhousing adaptor bolted to the back... Put a diesel starter motor in the hole.
Id offer you one but my primary spare has fragged the sprag, fozzys using the backup spare and the emergancy spare has a siezed rotor..

Thanks Dave, now to decide whether to source a diesel starter or pull the gearbox out again and put the spare housing in. I discussed the problem with the previous owner, who apologetically remembered he had come to the same conclusion after replacing the original, cracked, housing with what he thought was a similar one. Might need to work on something else for a while until I decide what to do. Glenn
Id be sourcing a diesel starter motor....
its a bit tetrisy to get it in there but its a lot better than what you have to do to swap the flywheel housing.

I've decided to go with the original starter, since the gearbox is not that hard to remove at this stage. Next problem is that the only good housing I have doesn't have the inspection hole for the timing marks, so I'll have to make up a pointer and index the crankshaft pulley with marks. Great stuff for a frustrated amateur engineer like myself! Could always get the original cracked housing repaired, but my time is free and alloy weldings not. Cheers, Glenn
