To Bushranger: I bought a rheostat from wreckers, but couldn't get it to work on a test setup in the shed. So did nothing!
To roverrescue: Steve this sounds great. Is the 'white electrical tape' the same stuff we use to wrap/bind wiring together except white instead of black?

I found black leckie tape worked a treat. Either leave a sliver uncovered, or make a little hole in it.
I did that as a quick fix the first night I drove mine, and five years later, the adage that the best permanent fix is a really good temporary fix has yet again been proven true!
I do think the Army flip up covers are a good idea as well, but they also cover the ones that you may want to pull over for!

Thanks all for those great ideas. I'll try some form of 'thin film rheostat' - simple, targets only the offending lights and won't break!!
