Grover, use one of the rubber bungs that is fitted onto the firewall, cut it and slide the wire through there. Or, follow the wiring that goes from the engine bay into the cabin and zip tie it to that.

You will need to borrow a mates antenna, or get it tested .... I have a funny feeling that your aerial cable is at fault

If you were in Morley / Perth WA .... You could come to my orffice and I could hook a brand new 6.5db ground independent UHF Aerial in to it and find out "what's wrong" in 60 seconds flat

By the way ... Is your CB 27mhz or UHF?? ...

It is a fairly old unit has been in the range rover since we got it which was about 10 years ago!

So from its age i am guessing it is 27Mhz?

The model name is UNIDEN 40 CHANNEL PRO501XL.

Also the aerial cable is soldered onto the aerial and i have put electricle tape around a couple of spots on the earthing which were exposed (it worked fine 2 years ago in the range rover and since then has only been sitting there aging with no use)

    cb vs uhf

Probably the best thing to do would be to give it away to somebody and get a uhf

So it wont work...I have read the best thing to do is buy a cheap radio and a good aerial, so how much would i be able to get a set up for? I cant afford to go crazy but i want one which will obviously work in convey situations and on the highway to listen to the truckies

Also by give away do you mean it is pretty much worthless. If it wont work why would anyone want it.

I've got 27mhz (like yours) and UHF in my disco.

27mhz is nice and quiet when I travel with mates who have them fitted also. (good to hang crap to those with only UHF) ...

fit the 27mhz if you want, but get UHF for the convoy .... even on the highway it's mostly UHF ... and the best handhelds are UHF for spotting, reversing the van, etc.

    Stevo

BTW make sure the antenna you've connected is one that's meant for 27mhz
