Thread: Brake Caliper Studs Missing

Many years ago on my D1 the rear calliper bolt on the RHS front fell out.
Luckily I was only travelling very slowly at the time as when I applied the brakes the calliper rotated up about the front bolt and cam locked against the inside of the rim. VERY SCARY ... I reckon it probably wasn't done up properly from new. Got a replacement bolt (came with an application of loctite on it) put it in and checked all the others. Problem solved, but I'd hate to think of the consequences at highway speed.

On the Bells line of road heading towards Lithgow , I was travelling around 110 kms , Glad the Studs didn't decided to come off then

I think that you are the recipient of "Bolts not tightened up" in the first place

So give all the "other set's of calliper" bolts a check as usually brakes / bearings / ect are serviced in pairs


At least you now know what the hand brake is used for

They were as tight as I could get them in with ratchet & socket when I rebuilt the front end , new seals , bearings etc, I checked the other side and they were $%$# tight and I used the same loctite on them , perhaps the question I should be asking is " Which Loctite" is the correct one to use for Brake Calipler Studs?

I wasn't travelling at speed so I managed to stop the car by applying the brakes Gently.

Mmmm ... I don't use Loctite ... .... All my bolts are still tight ... as I am always checking out under the car once a month

Now I will have to give them callipers a checkup on Saturday


I can't recall ... But maybe some spring washers would be the go

I wrote off a County at Bendethra many years ago thanks to the same problem!

Messy enough to put my wife off 4wding for life!

Spoke at the time to both Davis and Cooper and they reported back at how often those bolts are not fully tightened, when checked!

Firstly if you need some replacement bolts? PM me - no charge.

I have removed quite a few of these and they are never locted in - just super hard to crack and then they are finger tight. If they are not done up correctly in the first place they will fall out - sooner than later.
