My money is on a faulty/dirty MAF and the ecu is probably causing the EGR valve to open (if its still operational) making it worse.

With the MAF disconnected I've found there's better low down throttle response (same as before the temp gauge gets to normal) but poorer performance at higher revs.

so there is a significant difference with a (serviceable) MAF connected vs disconnected? Like Lionel, I can't tell much difference with and without it connected on my Td5...so maybe the MAF is stuffed, but given it's cost, will get it checked first...

Try cleaning it first. MAF cleaner spray cans are available from auto outlets.

I have a (spare) faulty MAF that cleaning doesn't make it any better though.

Here is the deal, disconnected MAF, not a dam thing, no difference, Zilch.
But then I disconnected the other one on the air box outlet before the MAF, bugger me drunk, new car. no hesitation, smooth at 100 kph, problem solved.
Now are we talking about the same thing, I know I asked before, the MAF is the one on the tube between the air box and the turbo, CORRECT? ;)
Or have I got an extra one?

You have correctly identified the MAF (Mass (of) Air Flow). The other one is the ambient air pressure and temperature (AAP) combined sensor.

Recently I cleaned my AAP sensor for the 1st time in 180K Kms because cleaning the MAF didn't fix the very bad driveability problem. Trouble is, I cleaned the Inlet Air Temperature and pressure combined sensor (IAT) in the inlet manifold at the same time, so don't know which one was causing the problem. The AAP sensor was filthy so it may have been that one. I cleaned it with MAF cleaner.

Once you clean that sensor and reconnect the cable, you might find connecting the MAF actually makes a difference.

Thanks Graeme, I thought I was on the right track with the MAF but like already stated no difference in performance either way.
The AAP might be the reason for some TD5's poor performance, meanwhile we have been chasing the MAF as the culprit for poor running;).
I cleaned the AAP once before along with MAF, might be time to replace it.
Any idea on what an AAP is worth and where I can purchase one? Might be worth replacing both:mad:
I will get on to it tommorow and replace both.
