    Moving back....

    hey all,

i've been thinking about moving my engine back. Its a 300tdi(now2.8tgv) 1998 defender 110 cab chassis.

the 200tdi's ran a shorter(about 4 inches) bell housing, mated to the lt77 gearbox. I think this bell housing has the same bolt pattern to suit the engine and R380 gearbox.

can anyone see any major difficulties in doing this? lets assume the engine is the 300tdi to keep it simple, the 2.8 is similar enough.

    welcome to all thoughts
    Serg

When I did this to a shorty, IIRC the implications were the rear tailshaft length (may be ok on the 110"), propshaft clearance on the Xmember (may be ok on the 110"), clearance of the firewall (cut it and the TD will be narrower than the V8), the oil filter got in the way of the front axle (may be ok on the TD). The only other thing that I can think of may be the speedo cable length, exhaust adjustments etc.

I think Serg is thinking along the line of the short bell housing and leaving the gearbox and t/case in the same position.

AFAIK the short input shaft for an R380 is rare like hen's teeth. I seem to remember this coming up every so often in the UK forums.

I think Ashcroft's used to have them but not available more. Contact Dave Ashcroft would be best bet.

Oh yeah. Much easier that way.

    thanks guys,

the short imput shaft shouldnt be a problem, i know a couple of guys that can build me one...

just trying to go through and sort as many problems as i can before i jump in.

doing the move will allow me to install a full width intercooler and full width rad, and redesign the mounting so fitment/removal is easier.

i will probably have to fab up a new fan cowl, but thats preety easy to.

    keep the thoughts coming,
    Serg

    Hi Serg,

building the box is easy enough, the problem is getting the parts,

there are 4 types of pinion shaft, you would really want the stronger suffix L for the 2.8, you will also need the different front nose casing for the clutch release bearing but the main problem is getting the 380 short 4 cyl bellhousing, the 77 one will not do.

    thanks Dave,
can you give me part numbers for each?

whats the difference in the bell housings and why wont the lt77 bellhousing not work?

I don't have all the numbers but I have some, what is the serial number of the 380 you are using ?

the 77 one is 30mm too long, you can fit it but the pinion will be 30mm too short

ill find out the serial number tomorrow, where do i look?

so the lt77 bellhousing is no good because of the suffix L pinion shaft being to short?

if i get a custom made pinion shaft, can i use the lt77 belhousing? or are there other issues?

what is the front nose casing?

how much do the short R380 bellhousings go for and what is there availability?

thanks for your help Dave, always good to know the info is coming from a reliable source.

    cheers, Serg

the serial number is on the oval flat below the oil filler level plug,

all 380's are made as a direct swap for the earlier 77,

the rear casing on the 380 is 30mm longer to house the extra rear support bearings,

so the overall length stays the same the bellhousing is 30mm shorter,

so if you put a 77 bellhousing on a 380 the overall box is 30mm too long and the pinion won't reach,

you can make a special pinion but this is easier said than done,

the front nose casing is the small casting that bolts around the pinion, the clutch release bearing on the V8 and TDi slides on a sleeve that bolts inside the bellhousing,

on the short 380 the bearing slides on a sleeve integral with this casing just like the 4 cyl 77 one.

you can't buy the 380 short bellhousing in the UK, on back order for about 3 years !

    Dave
