		Thanks for the follow-up.
I'm not sure the oil is the culprit, I'm starting to think there is a design flaw in the lubrication system of these engines, far too many need big ends, or more, between 150-300,000km when using the correct viscosity and specification of oil.

I've heard of 3 with similar (almost identical) fault in the past few weeks.
- vehicle 1 - heavy oil
 - vehicle 2 - diesel gas system and heavy oil
 - vehicle 3 - diesel gas system

all at different stages of their life.
no clear-cut common denominator yet, maybe just coincidence

I will side with Rick on this. They are a wear item and particularly so on 300s.
Ive only stripped 3, 300tdis down, all of them running 15/40. ALL of them had serious slip bearing wear. Engine hours/km were all over the place.
The "worst" was 25,000km after a rebuild with 3 oil changes of Castrol Diesel... 1 and 3 conrod/crank slips down to copper? Go figure. (pulled sump to fix leak - thought Id check the bearings) The other two had similar big end wear, both had 200ish km.
I dont think you can "judge" an oil unless you do analysis and/or on engine strip down. Just cos it feels good, or doesnt use oil isnt really enough.

I don't even think oil type as in exxy synthetics help either.
Mine has had a steady diet of Delvac 1 5W-40 for the last seven years, but the oil tests over the last few years have been 'average' at best and it's only clicked over 258,000km.
I'm dropping my sump on the weekend and dropping all the big ends and a couple of main caps.
Hot idle pressure has dropped significantly from spec (I only threw a mechanical gauge on this arvo) so it can't be good......

Either that or people are just starting them and going straight up without letting the oil get around the to all the important bits. For the time and cost it wouldn't hurt to have a look though. Pat
