Thanks again for your input. I will have to "digest" all that you've told me but it looks as if I'll have to get "Pheonix" to add a whole new chapter to the operators manual.
btw What is a 'facet" pump?
Because of the problems I've had with the original mechanical diaphragm pump (sticking and leaking valves) I been thinking about installing an electric fuel pump (ex Commodore or similar)
The carby repair kits didn't make it to town last week so I haven't even re-assembled them yet.

From what I understand the basic problem is the action of bacteria in the fuel. This produces the varnish and scale.
It is a problem mainly of humid climates - the bacteria needs some moisture to grow.
It is more a problem than it used to be for two reasons -
1. The bacterial infection used to be rare but has spread so much that it would be unusual to not have it now.
2. Leaded petrol tends to inhibit the growth, unleaded does not.
