Are they both 4s or is the LWB a 6??
Hey guys.
I just bought a S2A 109" truck cab with a wooden genuine trayback (it's listed below).
I have bought it with the intention of selling it after a full nut and bolt restoration that will bring it to better than showroom spec. It will be sold with 1 years rego.
I am in the process of starting a restoration business, so if anyone is interested or might have a vehicle of their own that they would like restored, please don't hesitate to contact me.
This is the first landy but it won't be the last - photos are coming soon.
Now to the subject of the post.
I have a S2a SWB gearbox that is in perfect running condition and the gearbox in this S2a LWB is in desperate need of a rebuild.
Is there any differences between the SWB and LWB gearboxes that would prevent me from making a straight forward swap? Is there any difference in the gear ratios?
Thanks in advance.
Robbie

just bolt it straight in, no difference between LWB and SWB
the 4 pot and 6 pot has a different bell housing and depending on suffix different ratios/bearings.
assuming both were 4 pots its a direct swap. if you had a 4 and 6 pot box then you just swap the bell housings.
If you have different suffixes and the layshafts got different bearings then do a tooth count on both layshaft gearsets and do a direct swap of the bell housing and the layshaft if the tooth count matches OR strip the gearsets off of both spline shafts and then reassemble the appropriate gears on the spline shaft that has the bearing mount to suit your bell housing if the tooth count is out.

Just to clarify Dave's post - Series Landrover gearboxes have serial numbers with letter suffixes - these are the suffixes he refers to.
But apart from the difference between the six and the four bell housings, there are no differences between swb and lwb boxes, although there are differences with progressive changes reflected in the suffix letters.

with regard to the bell housing differences, it was about that era that they went from mechanical to hydraulic clutch mechanisms.
