    Disco Dieso Woes

A friend of mine has a 97 Disco Dieso, it keeps popping the head gaskets and she has spent nearly 16,000 on it since new with engine repairs, is there a common reason why it keeps throwing the gaskets? shes at the stage now where she wants out of it and is asking 3 grand for it, apparently its a nice machine just has head problems, she is in Canberra anybody want one for spares? shes happy to wreck it or sell it outright.

    The first things are.

What replacement gaskets are they using. The genuine one is they only one to use as the flash aftermarket ones are terrible and nearly always blow again. I alway use new head bolts as well. Some re-use them but I would not risk it myself as they stretch.

The head and or block need to be checked and possibly resurfaced to ensure they are totally flat.

Never put inhibitor in after a gasket change, untill it has done a few hundred Ks at. It is bugger for finding gaps.

Is the water pump buggered or the radiator clogged?

The 300tdi can be prone to head gasket and head failure but nearly always due to overheating. If its not been cooked each time then its your parts or poor workmanship.

I'll almost guarantee they aren't using genuine gaskets. ELRING are the OE suppliers to LR and are ONLY to be used. I have had a 100% failure rate with ACL and Payen.
And rule number 1 with Tdi's. If it has got hot, replace the head bolts. Always.

I know she hasnt been using a Landy workshop, mobs like LubeMobile etc, its had the cam replaced and numerous head gaskets, the water pump has been replaced too, its going at the moment I think she said its over heating at times, her partner drove it to Sydney and back recently and it went ok but she wants out of it, guess its cheap enough for what it is not that I know much about the Discoes, I know Disco Steve was having dramas with his Disco1 dieso, think he had head problems too.

There lies the problem. The vehicle needs to be assessed and worked on by someone who KNOWS these vehicles.

Most non landrover specialist workshops actively dislike the product, and thats where the quality of work suffers.

My TDi did a few head gaskets, turned out the block was warped. 3k is cheap, even if you factor in an engine rebuild.

It needs to be looked at by someone who knows them backwards: Ray at Canberra Motor Works is my choice in Canberra. They're in Mitchell. He's looked after my 300Tdi now for 6 years and it still goes like a train (well, a slow train) even after 320000kms.
