It is a manual transfer lever ... You can feel it slip out of High to neutral, and then, the resistance of slipping it into the Low range ....

Regardless of "Light or no light" / If it did not engage then you would have heard the sound of revs of the motor, as the T/C would most probably be in neutral

discoknight from reading this post the guy that helped you is not familiar with rovers, I suspect he asked because when you where bogged he saw only one wheel spinning, due to no CDL this can happen, and in most 4x4's that means that the transfer case is not engaged thus not in 4x4 mode.

Anyway I was trying to get out with some assistance and the blokes helping me reckon the car was not in low range. Now I have never taken any notice but does a light come on the dash if low rang is engaged?

I don't think it does. After I got out I went and found a steep hill and used hill descent to get me down so that told me that low range was working?
    G'day DiscoKnight
We just got back from Harrington last week - its a great spot for fishing and a bit of beach driving.
I don't know what you drive but my D1 V8 petrol auto cruised around fine. I don't get any lights indicating low or high - only when I engage the CDL do I see the CDL indicator on the dash.
I used H2 and H3 with the CDL in - on the sand at Harrington. What were your tyres down to?
