TD5 Inlet Manifold Cleaning after EGR Removal

I removed my EGR a few months ago from my 2001 TD5 D2 and like everyone else, was alarmed when I cleaned the MAP sensor with just how much gunk and tar was coating the interior of the inlet manifold.

Before I embark on the horrible task of removing the inlet manifold and cleaning it with solvent, brush and a strong stomach, I wanted to know if the whole process is worth it? Besides peace of mind, will it deliver any benefits?

    Has anyone else done this?

    Thanks,
    Alistair

if you really feel keen to pull the manifold off then go for it, i myself would not bother, ide be more worried about cleaning the oil out of the intercooler!

Do a search.Dave Blknight did a really good post on how to clean the intercooler without the mongerel job of taking it out to clean.

Yeah! I pulled the intercooler out and flushed it with prepsol last weekend. An absolute bugger putting it back in... my wife almost booked me a room in the insane asylum

This filthy manifold is the only grubby thing left.

    Cleaning Manifod

When I did my EGR , the inlet Manifold was reduced considerably with thick gunk . I removed the manifold and found the inlet ports were partialy closed off with more gunk. It took me most of a day to clear the manifold and carefully clean out the ports. Beware if you have delicate hands wear gloves , I think it was worth it Cheers Porgey

    Thanks Porgey,

Did you notice any differnce in the engine after your clean? Or was it mainly a placebo effect? And yes, that black gunge is awful, after doing the EGR. I now use disposable gloves for such work. I was also thinking of getting a cheap toilet and bottle brush for the job.

    Manifold

Alistair . There was a heap in there and I used a spray can of Degreaser to get to the bad patches around in the manifoldand rinsed out with the hose . I just gently removed the crud from inside the ports without degreasing. Cheers George

A tip that was given to me on another forum. Get a piece of old speedo cable or similar and stick in on a drill. The outer ends will fray out and give you a nice long spinning wire brush.

Unfortunately this tip arrived two days after my manifold went back on (not a landrover) so it didn't save me any hard work.
But after the cleaning, my work car gained about 20km/h in the hill I use to benchmark my vehicles.
