what are my swivels empty and diff housing over full?

    thread title should read:
WHY are my swivels empty and diff housing over full?

Now this one is really odd, My swivels where empty, both of them, even though only one appears to have a slight leak, so I filled them up.
Ok so not so strange but when I checked the diff oil it literally poured out of the oil level whole, maybe 400ml or it may have just seemed that much when I removed the bold. Now in my head its impossible to over fill the diff as the oil will pour out before you get the bolt back in. Also the person who last filled them was a trusted mechanic.
So could my swivel oil could get into the axel housing, (diff)?

yep, look at the housing, theres a seal that sits in the housing where the 6 or 7 mounting bolts are (number varies from series to county +) when that starts to fail it pumps the oil out into the axle assembly.

it is also possable to overfill the diff or check it at the wrong angle.

Also, the seal is a directional type, the actual 'active' seal lip faces towards the axle housing, so oil WILL move from swivel to diff easier than the other direction. And as Dave says, a fair amount of oil migration will occur if the seal is worn or the stub axle support inner needle roller is worn and the inner axle is moving around a little...
The key also here is to check these oils EVERY service. I actually change mine evry engine oil change, mostly to see if any water etc has found it's way in...

Best thing to do is remove the seals and let the oil spash through.Every LR I have owned leaked through those seals,I just run 85/140 oil in the diff and my CV's in the fender are as tight as the perverbial after 11 years. Pat

On, i can imagine that will be a bit of a PITA.
A job for "sometime" in the future then
Pics would be handy as a reference.

I was just thinking would that LR liquid grease stuff, (forgot its name) prevent this happening? The stuff made to replace the oil in the swivels?

You can't stop it happening,it's like the tojo gearbox to transfer leak, there has been countless fix's but over time it will leak again. As JC said, the seal has oil either side but only seals one way. Pat

Since I used the grease It hasn't happened to my 93RRC.

BUT if you filled the hubs to the correct level not much should migrate unless you park on very steep side slopes a lot.

It is pretty harmless as long as you check the levels every say 5KKM.

i hardly do 5k in a year its a time thing for me I'll just have to check them once and a while, next time they are low i'll try the grease.

Maybe I can fit a tube from the diff back to the swivels LOL

I like the idea of just removing the seal entirely but i think the oil would just sump in the diff and im not sure the swivels would get enough oil?

That's a very good point, you're not removing the filler plug on the swivel housing and filling right to the top are you Steve? You know there's also an oil level plug half way up the swivel housing don't you???
