So the overlap of the gasket to bore is 5MM or 2.5MM radius bigger than the bore. This may change a little as the gasket is torqued down but not much, certainly not more than 0.5MM.

I am SURE that the sleeve is not 2.5MM thick.

I do not know where your gasket came from . Maybe it was a 3.5 gasket on a 3.9???
Or perhaps the marks you were referring to were from the inner edge of the gasket. Even that would be 2MM bigger than the bore and would not be waterproof as there would be little tension there.

    G`day Philip

It may not seem important but this gasket and liner i`m refering to come from a 10 bolt 3.9ltr or B or higher suffix 3.9ltr engine , it is an Elring composite gasket , which is factory .

Which is the same as the blokes in questions engine .

All I can say is that i can see and feel the liner sitting up on this engine block and i can see and feel the groove around the gasket fire ring .

I`m not interested enough to measure anything because i can see it .

    Cheers

Have you considered you may have a porous head, you may have water leaking into an inlet port or exhaust port, maybe you could remove the pushrods for the leaking bore and see if water is still getting into the bore with both valves in the closed position, good luck, Regards Frank.

Hi All,well i found out what the Problem is,i had it at the place in Yatala who did the heads for me and the put a camera into the cylinder all they could see is that the water was pouring in from the top some where around the gasket,so today i pulled of the intake, and head, made up some steel plates to seal the water ports, filled up the top radiator hose and gently breathed, water flooded out between the liner and the bore,so its the liner,it looks fine but i guess looks arnt everything,so my next question is does anyone know where i can buy a re-conditioned short motor from in the Brisbane area as im told the liner cant be re-set.. cheers for all your help Brad

The liners can be replaced with stepped liners and the crack in the block welded. I understand Bruce Davis in sydney does this.

BUt if you need the car quickly Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide usually can supply new short motors or used .

The guy near Buderim would probably have a motor.

There are a few places around Brisbane:

Murray at Jag & Rover Spares at 3/19 Kelvin Street Kelvin Grove 07 3356 5255 has low km imported motors

    M R Automotive at Anzac Av Redcliffe 07 3284 6688

I had a similar problem with my 3.9 and had the motor rebuilt, with new well everything and its been great since - there is a thread somewhere in here about it. I chose to rebuild mine as at least then you know what you have and are not risking buying another engine that may have similar issues in the future.

    Good Luck
