    2007 Defender drive train clatter

    Hi

I have a 2007 Defender 110 (with Puma engine) & still under warranty. It experiences severe drive train clatter in low range locked (eg gravel trails) when changing gears. You can hear & feel the drive train clunk from one end of the slop to the other.

This also appears to make smooth gear changes difficult. Even slow changes can grate. The transmission doesn't appear to have a lot of play, however the free travel in the rear diff is about 12 degrees of pinion rotation...seems excessive to me, but Land Rover dealers reckon it's OK. I'm not sure, and I don't have a lot of faith in the dealers anyway.

It has had the clutch upgrade to improve gear changes, but it doesn't override the above situation. I've had Defenders and old Rangies before, and I know this should not be normal, despite more drive train slop than other 4x4s. Has anyone else had a similar problem. I suspect the rear diff, but it would be good to have other cases to help my case with LR.

    Thanks

    Brid

My first Diff had little slop in the drive train. It did not clunk or thump on gear chagnes. They replaced it with another one due to a oil leak - New one is awfully noisey - and clunks like crazy on gear changes in high range. The third replacement diff is on back order....

Sounds like they're not lapping them in properly at factory. Maybe got an apprentice on the job.
Anyhow, have done this before in a hilux diff using engineers blue and it was quite painless.
Do it yourself and at least its a job well done...

you dont go out and spend a motsa on a new car to work on it yourself. LR would love if all its owners would do that, that way they could wipe their hands of all the issues..

    cheers phil

And its not just a lapping job with those rear diffs in that model, either

You may want to get the dealer to check the transfer case intermediate shaft endfloat also, I have a customer with one that has now had a transfer case, a rear diff and a trans all in 8000km.

I have a 6000km old Puma 130 here now with a leaking rear diff pinion seal, too.
