I still think the 7.50x16 are the way to go, these are the sime konvoys I have on my landie. Agressive, and cheap, but probably not as well wearing as the Michelin.

Not me. :(
Hopefully will be putting bar treads on Ambrose soon, and the (very good) Hankook 235s will be going on Gus. :)
I will then be getting another set of rims and some SteelTreks so I don't wear out the Bar Treads if I take Ambrose long distance!
I like 7.5R16s and never saw any need to change the rims my car came on.
I use Bridgestone Desert Duelers 604v's. They don't sound suitable for what you want but they've served me well on and off road.
The reason i went the Bridgie route was I could never seem to find Michelins. I'm glad there is the option of XZLs though just try finding anything out about them on the Michelin Australia website. I expect they're too exxy no I'm used to the cheaper bridgies.
I have a full set (5) of olympic steeltreks brand new which I have no use for anymore.
Only problem is Im in Perth WA not Hobart:(

If you're fitting these to standard RR steel rims, then you will need to run tubes as there's no safety bead.
I ran my Dunlop Super Grippers on RR steelies with tubes & got sick of getting a puncture on every trip out that needed pressures dropped.
I now run them tubeless (even though they're a tubed type tyre) on RR alloys. So far, so good.
In a 7.50 x 16 the simex MP trekker is a good mud tyre and not too expensive.
I used to run 7.50 x 16 Firestone SAT crossplys on my disco but you can't buy them anymore.

Michelin XZL's are it.
I have several sets and are an awesome tyre. They don't get punctures, grip really well and last. I have just done a 4000k trip towing a car trailer on them no probs, I even did a mad dash through the torrential rain to grafton and back towing a loaded car trailer and they performed beautifully. 120kph in monsoon type conditions.
On the melbourne trip I ran 50psi in the front and 70psi in the rear. Off road my default setting is 20psi and rarely need to change that. They are mounted on 7" rims tubeless. I find on the 6" you can run lower pressures.
At mt mee in absolute slop they dug in and I had NO slippage while other vehicles were skating all over the road. The only drawback to the trye is they only come in 7.50 16 in Australia.
I bought 7 last year at $345 each.
