would of had this car back on the road a lot sooner if it wasn't for the fact that we had a blown head and a firewall change.

well fingers crossed we haven't done any damage and we got off lightly..

Don't have any gasket paste so will have to finsih the re assembly tomorrow.

Just how I do things here..... If there is any known risk of a runaway be ready to smother the intake with a rag or your hand. I will save it:)

what gasket paste you need.....?

Sounds very like an accumulation of cleaner if thats what you can smell, BUT i am concerned that the turbo seals may have let go causing the runaway. The white/ blue smoke is definately a worry, and the fact that it stopped afterward is also a worry:(

first things first...

leave everything thats off off. pull the glow plugs, drop the injector lines/harness crank it over by hand for at least 2 full turns of the crank and wind it on the starter till you get oil pressure.

once youve got that far wind it again while someone whatches the turbo inlet/outlet (do the exhaust as well if you can) for fresh oil.

then do a compresion check with a compression gauge (checking rings and valves)

if all of that comes up reasonable reassemble but leave the hoses from the intercooler off.

start it up, if the turbo fails to blow misty oil put the turbo-intercooler hose on

start it again

if the intercooler fails to blow stuff your good put it all together and chalk it up to clean the intercooler properly.


my theory

the turbo bearings are loose and the turbos spindle flogged, the seals failed oil fed into the engine and ran it on. BUT you also had the exhaust turbo seal fail and the oil coming out there burnt on its way down the pipe. Its stalled when its overheated the pot heads or its siezed up.

I hope its just a case of some left over cleaner in the intercooler and you get lucky with it.

We had a similar prob a while ago with the county, dad was playing with the injector pump and stuffed the govener (he didn't know that):eek::eek:
Cranked it over and away it went:o
Ever heard a county raw to well past the govener? it's not nice, we ended up bloking the intake with a big rag (almost got sucked in:D)
We got away with no damage luckily, tested the re-build out though, loosened it up abit:twisted:

if the turbo bearing seals let go and leaked oil......

wouldnt the inlet manifold be wet.......?

according to lou.....only the exhaust manifold was wet.....with oil....in No.1 port.....



this sort of led me away from the turbo........and more towards either the intercooler residue.......or the engine internals......
