Sorry I can't help much with the gaskets questions but it may be worth getting a Workshop Manual off eBay

They really do come in handy

Land Rover Discovery Series 1 Workshop Manual (Rave) - eBay Media, Cars, Trucks, Clothing, Merchandise, Media, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 16-May-09 13:26:46 AEST)

LAND ROVER WORKSHOP MANUAL DISCOVERY DEFENDER RAVE - eBay Land Rover Workshop Manuals, Land Rover, Car Manuals Literature, Cars, Parts Vehicles. (end time 07-May-09 23:32:29 AEST)

I got mine for about $15 from the UK but you might be able to pick up a CD for cheaper than that
I have a copy of the RAVE cd but its not ideal as it only covers the 3.9i Disco 1 not my earlier model. Is there a version that coveers the pre 94 discos out there?

Too be honest I'm not really sure

Check it out on eBay, perhaps one for a Rangie would do the trick?

They came out with the 3.5

A band aid may get you more life if heads are reasonable. At a minimum if original you need a new cam, lifters and head gaskets. The gas setup can let coolant into combustion chamber only is not around oil.

If your going to pull the engine out or dump the car you may as well go exploring 1st in case its not far gone. If you can get the gear compression test it before pulling the heads.

Will involve pulling Radiator, Dizzy, Timing cover, obviously all the EFI and manifolds.

Not that bad to do just take plenty of pics and ask here if you have issues as there are some very clued people here. Not me

im not sure but if it was a head gasket, i think the expansion tank would be constantly bubbling while running..

Oil has to come from some source.... Oil cooler in radiator?

They don't always blow the combustion part 1st. In Rover 8's Oil passes through the head gasket.

Assuming it is a head gasket problem does this sound like a good deal?

Or would I be as well ust buying the gaskets, bolts and getting my existing heads skimmed? Oh yeah and should I be using the tin or composite gaskets? Mine is a '93 V8i Disco - dual fuel.

How can I be sure its not anything worse than the gasket - I read a lot about slipped liners etc though I gather they are more common in the larger capacity V8s.

    Cheers in advance

    G`day Steve ,

from what i can gather yours is a 3.5 ?

The bloke the told you about the converter freezing , would be right , so long as it was on LPG at the time .

Yours will use tin gaskets and the head bolts on it can be used as many times as you like .

Unless yours has been rebored at some stage or been very very hot at some stage the liners won`t have moved and on 3.5s they only show as a noise and will more often than not if any good break rings more so than anything else when truly overheated .

The oil in the coolant is not likely to be because of a head gasket fault .

If the engine oil cooler runs through the radiator , i`d check there first before anything else .

The rough running on start up could be a number of things but if ignition related would expect worse on LPG .

Rather than considering fitting head gaskets it would make more sense maybe to diagnose the cause , eg .. plug colours , dry and wet comp test , leak down , etc , well that`s how i`d look at it .

It could probably use head gaskets at its age but won`t be a sure fix for the problem .

I can`t be of much help because there is too much i don`t know about its history .

    Cheers
