    TD5 Engine noise

Hi all, this morning I started my TD5 130 and then got out of the cab and noticed a muffled drum beat type noise coming from the Snorkel. This lasted about 40 seconds and then stopped. Is this normal and I haven't noticed it before or is it a sign of problems developing? Thanks in advance.!30man.

My FIL had something like that on his old Toyota-surf, turned out that it was something inside the snorkel that was loos. Could not tel you what though.

Thanks Entertainer. I will listen again in the morning as I feel the sound did not recur once the engine warmed up.I will also check for anything in the Snorkel. 130man.

Check that "stuff" is not caught up if you take out the air filter and poke a wire back up the intake. There's a "hyclone" style air-swirling-thingy on the inake to the airbox that can get blocked up with leaves and stuff comming down the snorkel (if it has a normal intake and no pre-filter). Some have cut this thing out and I do believe on later models it was ommitted.

Mine does the same, yes only when cold. Just thought it was the horses starting to puff. I dont think it is anything to worry about. mine has had the pre filter removed.

Hi Davros and Big Harold, thanks for the replies. The noise has not recurred but I dismantled the intake side of things and checked it out.All clear. There were two butterflies and some leaves in the airbox, but no sign of anything substantial enough to cause the beat noise I heard, in my opinion.I will keep an ear open over the next few weeks for any repetition.Cheers, 130man.

Has the TD5 got a ducks bum on the air box (ducks bum to me is that one way valve that lets out the water/dust) they make a noise when working.
    cheers

Yes I think it does. Supa dupa hyclone device dumps into it. Found a hairball in mine a while ago...

Hi Guys, "ducks bum" is a new term to me. I take it it is a way of dumping stuff out of the airbox?.I didn't notice one in the airbox. There is a Y shaped fitting in the air intake tube at a low point down near the chasis with one arm of the Y pointing down. Maybe this is a dump point?I will look again in the morning. Cheers, 130man.

Hi all, the muffled rapid drum beat recurred over the last few days. Definitely coming out of the snorkel and lasts about 25 seconds.Only on initial start up as it doesn't seem to occur once the engine is warm. Any suggestions as to the cause welcome.Cheers, 130man.
