    Engine capacity

Hi all, jst wondering if there is any way one can tell the size [capacity ] of the rover V8 engines? My new baby, an 88 Rangie, is supposed to have a 4.2 motor. Can this be verified by engine no, stamping on the block etc or do I have to take out a spark plug and measure how much fluid I can put into the cylinder. Thanks and I will be posting pictures soon. Bob

If it has a 4.2 then it probably has an aftermarket stroker crank.

I think it would be a case of pulling a plug and measuring the stroke, then comparing that to standard.

    Stumbled on this awhile back.
It may be of some use.

It might have the engine out of an LSE, they were all 4.2.

    Pretty unlikely.

Australian delivered LSEs were all 3.9s. The factory 4.2 never came to Australia.

Just checked my vin numbers against the link you posted, Harro, and guess what, my engine designation is "L" and there is no mention of "L" as an engine model. So none the wiser at the moment but all of the rest of the info describes my car exactly. Bob

    G`day Bob

What is the engine number prefix ?

Two numbers and a letter ?

This will tell you what it started out as and where it can from ( vehicle ).

    Cheers

Well Bob my curiosity got the better of me!
It would seem you have a 3.5 injected V8
if the 'L' is correct unless it is not the original engine.
Assuming of course that the linked chart is also correct.

Hence my comment that it is probably an aftermarket stroker crank.

I am going to rebuild my 3.5 using one of them.
