My 300tdi Disco did this and I thought it was the starter motor as well, I spoke to Ricks 4WD here on the Gold Coast and he said the starter tries to earth out though the handbrake cable and melts the sheath to the cable (which it did) but in the end all I had to do is run another earth strap from the Negative side of the battery to the engine block and I never had trouble with it again. Hope this helps.

    Regards Ian

You really need good earths, at least you should have 1 from battery to engine block, 1 from engine block to chassis, 1 from chassis to body of car. All earth points need to be clean, tight and attached to bare metal (not paint) and the diameter of the leads needs to big enough to suit the task, Regards Frank.
