Diff Pinion Seal and Swivel Seal any advice?

    Gday

Tomorrow I'll be spending the day on the Landy.

Need to do a front swivel seal and rear pinion seal, as well as an oil cooler hose.

Just wondering if anyone could give any advice or tips on changing the seals?

Is there anything important I should know?

    Thanks

Don't waste time changing just the seals, buy the flange kit so you never have to do it again. Pat

With a bit of care and measureing, the pinion seal can me made to run on new contact area easily so as to not leak, an new pinion flange is a better option, you know to mark the nut etc? not really the case with a new flange

The swivel seal, aslong as its only the seal is best done, by disconnecting the brake line or preferably dropping the caliper off instead, dropping the hub assembly off the diff housing, remove the backing plate and swap the seal, a little 3bond can come in handy for the seal mounting faces, just be be extra sure

I'll order myself a new flange. The rear diff has done 260,000 so it might be a better idea.

I might get a friend of mine to give me a hand with the swivel seal. Sounds a bit past my knowledge

Before doing just the swivel seal, check for free play on the swivel bearings/bushes, as any free movement here will allow the seal to leak, and just replacing the seal will not fix the problem except perhaps temporarily. Repair/replace what needs doing - not much more work. And in any case check the swivel preload while you have the seal off.

The updated flange comes with a metal dust cover that keeps crap away from the seal so it doesn't chew out. Pat

Think instead on the new flange I'll fet one of these:

Does anyone have any idea of what size I need? Murphys law will be that I get it apart and the local supplier won't have one in stock

And I'll put the swivel seal on hold for a while. And do the bearings at the same time

Hi if you have the time then strip the swivel as you suggest, if you want to fit a new seal in a hurry then split the seal with a fine saw, twist it to open the gap, do not pull apart or it will be ruined, fit to the swivel with the cut at the top and seal with RTV, this works best with the grease filled swivels.

    Best of luck.

    Thanks for the advice

I reckon I might give it a miss they aren't leaking too bad. I'll do them both at the same time and do the bearings and regrease them too
