    Don't reckon

It's only a stainless screw, even if it was a temp sensor when would it go off?

Yeah Jock, it would have to work in reverse wouldn't it. Somehow that doesn't compute... I was thinking too much about my unit that has the cable bolted on to the block rather than reading the water temp/level.

I could be wrong. If the screw earthed to the plug - plug earthed to the
radiator- radiator earthed to the chassis? if the plug had a nylon insert
so it is insulated, and only earthed through the wire?

    I think your probably right

I'm going to be replacing the radiator hoses as preventative maintenance soon, so I'll test it out for you and let you know

Spoke to Davey and have a plug with sensor coming.
I just hope the plastic plug does not crack like the OE did.

    thanks for all the help.

When I was converting mine to brass he told me they are a different material that won't crack

I may end up swapping the plastic one back in if it doesn't end up working

My wording may have been around the wrong way. My understanding is that the earth (negitive) is the switching wire rather than the positive. So as groucho said if the water level drops the sensor wouldn't know because it still has a circuit through the brass plug.

Its not a temperature sensor. I now have a TD5 and can't remember the TDi radiator configuration. If the brass plug is screwed into a plastic top tank it will possibly work but if its a metal tank that is earthed I suspect the alarm won't ever go off for a low coolant level. The stainless screw needs to be insulated from the chassis. If a TD5 "bleed screw replacement" type sensor is screwed into the brass plug it should work

    Don't tell me that

I had one but gave it away thinking I would never need it

I made one for my vehicle (300 TDi) and fitted it in the plug in the top of the Thermostat housing ?!?!? Is it better in the radiator ?? or does it not make any difference ?

    Cheers
