    TD5 Starting Problem

Just nearly completed engine and firewall swap to my TD5 Defender which was running well. Had started and driven however had to remove dash again whilst fitting instrument cluster which took a week.
    Now when you go to start it different things happen such as;
    1. Initial problem was starter motor just making constant ticking noise.
    2. relay under driver seat constantly ticks and fuel pump operates even when ignition sometimes off.
    3. When headlights are turned on the fuel pump starts up.
    4. Lights don't work.
Does anyone have any ideas or advice? It appears to me that the battery is OK?
    Many thanks
    Ben

It sounds like battery to me, even though I know you say the battery is OK.....

What voltage do you get across the terminals when you are cranking?

Starter motor clicking might indicate a bad earth issue. Is it a quick click (like, say 2 or 3 clicks per second)?

Dropped the battery for a test, however they want to charge it overnight prior to testing.
    Thanks Ben.

Yes it is a fast click, 2 or 3 times a second? What does that indicate?
    Cheers Ben.

Try cleaning the "trigger" wire on the starter motor,if its loose you need to squeeze the contact slightly with pliers to ensure a good contact.
I will be shifting this thread to tech chatter in a day or so as its more a tech issue than electronics.

I would be definetley looking at earths.

They can do some really funny things.

Are they definetley connected properly. Including the one from the gear box to the chassis?

The Earth on to Gear Box and Chassis was only earthing to the gear box, I cleaned up the chassis mount it is now earthing.

I no longer get the fuel pump to come on when I switch the parkers on; no power is getting to the switch

I can get the car to crank over by earthing my tester light to the gear box and touching the power wire on the ignition barrel.

But because the fuel pump no longer comes on I cannot get it fire.

Also When I connect the battery the relay near the fuse box clicks a few times?

yes check all earth connections including the ones around dash area, a crook battery would not give some of those faults not to say the battery is stuffed and making the starter click. the other relay you hear may just be the glow plug relay??

These problems started when the dash was removed and put back in start there and work your way out.
