    gearbox!!!?????? 1995 defender...bugger!

just had the landy towed home.....
got it to british off road....
Driving along the highway in 5th started to rev out.... pulled over and no drive ,clutch feels a little diffirent when pressing down on the pedel..but not hard to press.... also checked it had not jumped out of high low.....
got it to british off road and the mecanic tried it in all gears and it moved in 4th......mmmmmm not good.... was hoping it was just the clutch......
When i bought the defender about 10 months ago i had had a gearbox rebuild (one of the reasons i wanted this one!).... i am not happy.....

I feel your pain James, I bought my D2 at 215k and at 225k it collapsed 5th bearing or so my resident LR geek believes. Bloody annoying when the rest of the box was still nice and tight.

It has an ex wrecker box in it at the moment and I have the original R380 on the bench waiting for me to make the specialist tools and find the cash for an overhaul kit. I would love to do the rebuild myself but I understand the box is a finicky bugger.

How long ago was the rebuild done, is there scope to push for a warranty repair ? If not, who should the rest of us avoid if we want a reliable rebuild done ?

Hmm, '95, wasn't that around the time there was a modification to improve the oil feed to 5th ? I vaguley remember the old man having the mod done under warranty

i think the rebuild was done about 18 months ago....
It was done by a landrover garage...will not say who untill i find out what happened.......
I rebuilt the box on my series 3.... but i did have the use of a workshop and spare car!... wish i had the time and a big shed!
even though i hate it at the moment there is nothing better than getting them going again! lol

I think I saw an R380 on ebay recently. Might be the ticket to get you going while you rebuild the box properly.

When I had mine done the wrecker box 2.5k on it's own. Once again, pushed into a corner and needed a solution, fast.

Don't forget to change the spigot bush while it is apart (assuming you don't throw a clutch kit in there)

Whoever thought 18" of input shaft just swinging in the breeze with a clutch on the end, was a good idea ?!? . There is damn near 3/16 slop at the end even with a reasonable input bearing.

That's a strange gearbox failure. It's not the mainshaft splines as it drives in 4th (that's the oil feed issue, not 5th gear).

5th gear revving out points to the clutch but that doesn't explain why it only moves in 4th. The fact that the clutch feels different leads me to think it's a clutch issue. Also, manual gearboxes can't slip.

something has gone in the interface of the input gear/shaft to the laygear or the laygear itself has got a problem. Mine went, but the gears held on but were very noisy in all gear bar 4th. Still involved a rebuild.

Some people swear by the R380, I don't. Two rebuilds one for the problem described above and another for the output shaft and tc input gear splines.

just got the girl to phone up the landy shop..love these 11 hour work days so much time for getting stuff sorted! They say the gearbox is stuffed (shock!).. and not worth rebuilding..(have not found out the reson yet will phone tmw!) so they can chuck a recon one in for 2700 + 750! to fit + a clutch $500 and then some seals...main/transfer etc .$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
    The car only cost $7500.........WTF!
I am having a pallet of tools and junk.sent from the uk in the next couple of weeks.... maybe its worth me chucking a gearbox on the top and waiting for a month or so....can pick them up for $200ish in the uk......... like some help on this one... or should i just buy a patrol.......

Do it, but chuck two on the pallet, then you've got one standing by just in case.
