    Question High range transfer gears???

    Hi all,
i was wondering what people think is a better option for a disco used mainly for touring, medium offroad and daily drive.
If running 32" or 33" tyres would it be best to change R&P to 4.1's or the transfer case gears to 1.4?
Also what is the most cost eficient, considering cost of gears and price of instalation?
I found this place in USA that has 1.410's and 1.667 for about $870 plus postage.

I just bought some 235x85x16 tyres off a guy with a td300. The reason he gave was that it overgeared it too much & it would'nt hold 5th

My tdi powers along on 32's, it annoys me how soon it drops into 4th but it is an auto.

    I went the other way-for a change

    I have a 130 defender 1996
I actually put 1:1.2 TX gears in or actually a whole txfr case from a disco 2 to improve the top speed and reduce the RPM an noise.

Deejay- I think 235/85/16 is the same as 750/16 and standard on defenders. Would think the 300Tdi needs a service rather than smaller tyres.

I actually put the Diesel gas system on mine and she cruises at 115kph (real) while towing a camper trailer and 5 people on board. Only time I could not hold 5th on the flat was into a 90kph headwind on the Hay plain. had to drop to 4th and the fuel consumption went through the roof.

Without the trailer it flies along on the taller gears. Only downside is hillstarts with a big load and trailer, need to start in low range.

    Cheers james.

What would the fitting costs be of new transfer gears compared with fitting new R&P?

Your looking around $1200 to $1500 for reduction gears and then fitting - maybe $1000 (dont really know). For the CWP your looking around $1000 for the gears from someone like ashcrofts and then fitting again. Would be comparable perhaps.

I would get the CWPs done as that way you get the benefit in high and low. Only thing is that it might rev a bit high with a tdi.
