    Oil Leak Around Transfer Case

Hi I have Series II LR Discovery TD5. I am just prioritising some repair work that needs to be done.

At the last service I was told that there was oil leaking around the transfer case. Is this a major issue and should it be attended to immediately?

I don't have a lot of knowledge in this area so just looking for some advise.

    Thanks

is it a leak or a seep?
If it's a seep then steam clean it and keep checking to ascertain where it is leaking from, with oil everywhere getting blown around it could be hard to pin point exactly where it's originating from.
I has a seep on mt transfer on the D1 and it was coming from the bottom plate cover retaining bolts. I found out that the some bolts actually screw blindly into the case and oil wicks pass the threads and gathers on the bolt heads. Thread sealer stopped that.
    but usually its the seals.

Another place to look at is the H/L range level entering the transfer case.
The o-ring might be old and could leak there. Mine does.

Ooo, that is what I've got, oil on the bolt heads. Did you take the whole plate off to fix it, if so is there a gasket? or can I just do each bolt in turn?

    Sorry for hijacking the thread

Ist I would drain the transfer case of oil., as you don't want oil leaking out of the bolt holes and it gives you a chance to clean the threads before you put the thread sealer on.
I can't remember the loctite part number for the sealer.
I didn't have a gasket on my D1 '96 and I believe the plate was mated to the case with a film of Hylomar.
I later replaced it with a gasket.

I also have had oil leaking from my transfer case, when I had the vehicle checked today I was told that the leak is from the Intermediate Pin, aparently this is only sealed with O-Rings.

I was told it is a very common place for them to leak.

The transfer case needs to be removed to fix this however, so expect a decent cost due to labour.

    Regards,

I currently have three leaks (rangie, but same case).

    From the front we have:
Front output seal, was changed 18 months ago and leaked from day #1.
Input seal, was bone dry for 10,000km. Then stored up and dropped a litre. This one oils the bolt-heads and makes it look like the plate is leaking.
    Rear speedo drive.

As a result my transfer box is halfway off. Might finish the job next week.

    Had leak there as well

There is a small drain between gearbox and transfer case. Its only small but if you take a good look you can see it

Mine oil was leaking from there - it was the "back to back" seal that needed to be replaced

Rave shows two individual seals with a common sleeve. Is this what you've got?

I've made a sandwich seal to go between the two cases. This way if either seal leaks, it can't get out and I don't care.

    Would be a seep.

Replaced the o-ring and no oil "leaks" any more.
