High Mileage Td5s - what can I expect?

    Hello All,

I have a defender Td5 with 110K on the clock. It's a lovely donk and hasn't let me down. It is regularly serviced (every 10K) and lives a pretty easy life (no towing and bugger all hard off roading).

With the lease about to expire, I am tossing up, whether to rollover (pardon the pun)or update to a PUMA.
I know the Td5 has plenty of life, but wondering how much is "plenty".

    So..............

Now that they have been around 10 years, how long should a well maintained td5 last?
Anyone into the high 200K or even 300K yet? What major work have you had done? If any.
Is there any preventative action I should take to prolong its life? (Other than the normal maintainance schedule.)

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Hey Paul,

I saw an albeit externally roughish looking one for sale last week with 350k on it

As for prevenattive maintenance, dont overheat it! and keep on top of the servicing.

I wouldn't classify 110,000Kms as anywhere near high milage. You have years of use left in it!

There was a thread quite some time ago about highest KMs done in a TD5, so a search might give you some more information.

This is the thread I was thinking of: TD5 engine life - discuss

I've personally seen and know the owners of 2 td5 discos.

Both with mileage over and beyond 300,000kms.

The biggest killer of rover engines by far is overheating, flush and clean the rad every year and rod every third and you can't go wrong. Pat

    110k,,barely out of nappies.

Be prepared to do hoses because of age, regardless of kms.
    Rocker cover gasket.
    Fuel cooler O rings.
Cam shaft access plug, Oring (front of motor)
    Probably injector harness.

These are all quick cheap and easy fixes. Common type of things for any make.

As previous posts have said with proper maintainance.
You should get easily 3 times this without any hiccup.

My old man's TD5 defender is nudging 300,000 at the moment. Daily driver along with regular trips to Stockon and Samurai. Still pulls quite well without any issues. The ECU pooped itself a lot earlier in the game, and the radiator was replaced but otherwise all it's had are oil changes. so far a good donk *touches wood*

I'd hang on to it. It's just run in. Perhaps a case of better the devil you know mate...... You've serviced it etc..you know its quirks and what needs doing.

    226,000

My 2002 D2 TD5 has more kilometres on it than any car I have ever owned before, but the motor also pulls better and has less leaks than any I have ever owned before. It has used half a litre of oil over 3000 km, which I can live with. 110,000 sounds like the motor is still young.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Yes, I probably didn't phrase my post correctly - I realise 110K is not much but I'm thinking if I keep it another 5 years it will have done 230 to 250K so, from what your saying it should be fine provided I look after it.

I've done the injector harness already.

....flush and clean the rad every year and rod every third and you can't go wrong.....
I know "rad" but, what's "rod"?
