When busted ... either you get "no drive" .. or ... you get "solid locked"
They don't make "noises" .. when broken (unless you blew splines, ect) /// But you do get "mechanical signs" from your front end

My advise to be cautious, is because I figured that you won't appreciate the purchase price of a new unit

well i can turn in about an 8th of a turn in either direction with a large screwdriver between the bolts (requires alot of force) then in turns the rear wheels so is that locked??

yes its a borg warner diff (it has it cast into the side of it and is clearly readable) unless there are more than one type that they used in that year.

as to breaking diffs well the rear has been repaired more times than i care to count (b4 i bought the car) as there are 4 holes welded up in the casing, and the front axle was broken because i got carried away with the throttle and didnt let up when i was going up some rather lumpy sections of track and it must have droped back down to solid ground while spinning at a good rate.

got it out of gear this time (oops) yes it turns firm but still freely, on the serial plate on the transfer case it has a model number 13-61-003 i guess that should tell you what box it is.

OK firmly but freely means the Viscous unit is OK.

I would avoid heavy around town traffic driving if you still have the front drive shaft disconnected or if the front Axles is broken.



Where are you? I have just bought an 88 model and you can have the diff centre and or axles if you want to pull them out yourself. I'm on the Gold Coast.

If it was a clink then nothing, it'll be an axle, most other things when they bust make nasty noises:D

What size tyres are you running? Or you really need to change your driving style on 10 spline rover gear. They will take a fair amount of punishment but not you teeth gritting doing spectacular wheel spinning in rocks wile wheel lifting etc.
You learn after a wile just how hard they can be pushed and no go bang.

Have you considered updating to 24 spline centers and changing the CV's to pre 86.
