Thread: Clutch/bearing noise???

If the clutch throwout bearing is rattling then you will only hear it when it is disengaged, that's why I said to apply pressure to take up the play in the system and if the noise stops then it is the clutch throwout bearing rattling, a very common problem with clutches, Regards Frank.

your symptom list fits a shot input bearing on the gearbox. (as previously mentioned.

This problem is unlikely to be the input bearing. When the input bearing is shot the gear box will usually whine in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th.

I used to work and later part owned a workshop in Melb called Gearbox Recondidioners. All we did was recondition gearboxes and fit clutches.

I am not up to speed on later vehicles as I have been out of the game now for nearly ten years.

Now I know this is a LR so I don't know if this is your problem but I will share this experience.

It was in the late 1980's we had a diesel Landcruiser come in with a crook gearbox. We overhauled the gearbox and transfer case and fitted a new clutch.

When it was all finished it had a horrible rattle at idle that went away when the clutch was depressed. This told us that it still had a gearbox problem. So we pulled it out and went over it with a fine tooth comb and found nothing, so we had to try something so we changed the input shaft with a new bearing.

Box back in rattle still there. removed and replaced the cluster gear(by now all our profit on original job is gone on these two parts) rattle still there.

By now we are tearing our hair out. We eventually went and was a Toyota dealer who did not know of the problem but suggested we try a genuine clutch kit. We could not see this working as the noise had to be coming from the gearbox but as we were desperate we tried this.

Bingo noise gone, quiet as a mouse. We later found out that the petrol and diesel clutch plates, (although will interchange and work ok) have different dampening in them, and putting a petrol clutch plate in the diesel will cause gearbox chatter at idle.

So my advice here before you rip the gearbox out and pull it down is to see it you can find some one who knows this problem to have a listen to it.

Would also be a good idea to drop the oil and check for metal in the oil and if it has a magnetic drain plug check the magnet. A small amount of fine metal particles on the magnet is usually normal.

well, box is out, clutch is worn but not stuffed so replacing anyway.DM Flywheel has around 30mm of play, (10 being the norm), so up for a newbie and we still havent opened the box yet. No, more like.

put a 240v electric motor on the front driving it on a flex hose coupling then stethescope the bearing plates.
