Hi Tracie and welcome.
The 1.8 petrol engine is the lemon in the Freelander family. It has thermostat problems that can overhead the engine and/or cause thermal shock. This can result in head gasket failure, overheating, warped heads and slipped liners.
There is a fix for the thermostat using a kit from land rover and some say it works OK but others say not.
On the positive side the car is 12 years old with 190,000km and still running.
The main viscous coupling in the rear drivetrain with the km the car has, should have been changed by now but you must get it checked - if it has locked it will cause major damage to the second gearbox/front diff that takes drive to the rear.
I have the same age Freelander with 270,000km but it is a diesel and that engine is totally reliable.
All I can suggest is that if you want this car - go into it with your eyes wide open. Get it checked by a land rover specialist and never, never, never let it get hot.
The 1.8 petrol Freelanders are cheap for a reason. If it were me I would look at one of the diesel models - the best of the Freelander 1s is the later BMW engined TD4 diesels - but the earlier diesel as I said is virtually bullet proof.
Cheers
Garry
