just purchased freelander XEDI few questions

    Hey guys!

New to this forum! just bought a 1998 LAND ROVER FREELANDER XEDI and i'm picking it up on monday. Paid 6,200 for it with almost a year rego and RWC & it has all service repair history etc. The car is very clean as you can see in the photos though its even more immaculate in person. It does have 300,000 + Km on the clock though it's been meticulously maintained.

Here is a link if anyone wants to have a look.

I'm also curious to know what performance modifications are possible to give the 2.0ltr more balls? Also i'm wanting to now where i can get well priced 2x fog light kit to sit onto the bull bar . Does Safari make a snorkel for these? And what is the opinion of everyone on upping th boost a little and installing a blow off valve? I understand a diesel engine is controlled by fuel, thus not requiring it to have a intake air throttle plate though if i install one purely for the asthetics and sound will i loose/gain any power or performance & also Does the freelander come intercooled?

Any questions answered or opinions of other are greatly appreciated

    Thanks!

    XEDi... That's what I've got.

Frankly, if you want to give it more 'poke', you'd be better off getting a different car!

You can stick larger intercoolers on and tweak the fuel system but where do you stop??? If you're wanting a more 'spirited' drive, I'd suggest you improve the brakes as well as the general handling... All of which cost $$$

Personally, I'd keep the car the way it is and save you money to buy a toy.

    Exclamation HELP!!!

Thanks Camel! I think it's the least of my worries at the moment.... The car dies on me today, after towing it home and having a closer look i realized that when the ignition is on position II the reds (all the dash lights) dont show but it will crank but not start. After having a closer look a few of the fuel hoses on the injectors where ripped off. I replaced the hoses and i got my neighbour who is a truck mechanic to bleed the fuel system (im not sure if its done properly or if i should take his word for it). It did start once and the SRS light stayed and and nothing else but as soon as we turned it off and tried to start it again it would continue to crank but not start. Also another thing i noticed was the time it "did" start the dash lights all came on just before it started..... I also checked the Haynes service & repair manual as weel as the RAVE workshop CD and found nothing that can help.

I bought this car for my partner as we are expecting a little one and needed a decent sized and comfortable car and now its screwed me the day after i purchased it!

If anyone has any idea or can point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated!! If anyone in melbourne can fix it ill pay them or if anyone knows someone that knows a mechanic that knows there land rovers and wont charge me an arm leg and a kidney please let me know. I recieve emails on my mobile phone so even a quick email to this address head_vlct@hotmail.com would be great. I service pneumatic, hydrologic, electronic and mechanical workshop equipment so i'm pretty good with my tools and mechanically minded so again if someone can point me in the right direction i'd be over the moon.

Thanks very much guys again any help is greatly appreciated!

ps. When i do get this thing going im thinking spot lights, snorkel a lift kit and some sunraysia wheels with road/mud tyres. Hopefully i wont have too many issues before i do some mods and take it fishing...

I think you need to look at this issue.

I haven't been involved with Freelander too much but there are control units that cover several areas of the car.

    From the manual:
The CCU is located on the back of the passenger compartment fusebox below the fascia. The CCU is responsible for controlling the following functions:
    Transit mode
    Anti theft alarm system
    Windscreen wipers
    Courtesy lamp delay
    Door open warning light
    Rear fog guard lights
    Lights on alarm
    Catalyst overheat
    Seat belt warning
    Handbrake warning
    Overspeed warning
    Rear screen wiper
    Tail door window
    Heated rear window

    Does that help?

Fuel hoses on the injectors ripped off...
That doesn't sound good to me!

TBH - The quickest & easiest solution would be to give it someone familiar with this engine... However...

If you want to have a crack at it yourself, get hold of the RAVE CD (talk to Inc) and work through the fuel system rebuild to see if you can work out what's missing. It's also worth noting that there are 2x belts (front & rear) on that engine...

    Thanks for the help guys!

Ok well car is sort of on it's way back to life....

I replaced the fuel return lines and had the ecu repaired as it had popped a diode somehow. I spoke to the mechanic who did the roadworthy as well as the auto electrician who did the repairs and they said this is possible i couldn't understand how but they assured me it was all caused by the car having faults with the fuel lines. (according to scanner)

Anyway now that it's sorted i have another issue!! The gasket that seals the crossover pipe and the inlet manifold has farrked itself causing it to whistle and squeal under boost as its letting out air. I dropped the car off yesterday at my local mechanic to replace the gasket and do me a general service. I could have comfortably done the gasket and service myself though i couldn't bare to spend another minute under the hood of the car.... plus having owned it for a week and to have only driven it for a total of a couple hours it frustrates me even more, and i'm having to borrow cars and catch public transport which sucks.... but on the bright side it's on it's way to recovery and should be ready by tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions guys.

    Martin.

It's good to hear that you're back on the road to recovery.

Enjoy the Freebee, I think they're a cracking car. The really early ones (pre TD4) do have some annoying niggles but on the whole I still like my one. Drive it smoothly & it should help keep the maintenance bills low...

Hi Tracie here and I am new to all of this 4WD gear and I am currently looking at buying my very first 4WD a Freelander 1998 petrol model.....can anyone advise me if I should go ahead with this? It has 190,000 on the clock and has had regular servicing the whole way. I really love it and drives really smoothly.
    Cheers Tracie.

    Hi Tracie and welcome.

The 1.8 petrol engine is the lemon in the Freelander family. It has thermostat problems that can overhead the engine and/or cause thermal shock. This can result in head gasket failure, overheating, warped heads and slipped liners.

There is a fix for the thermostat using a kit from land rover and some say it works OK but others say not.

On the positive side the car is 12 years old with 190,000km and still running.

The main viscous coupling in the rear drivetrain with the km the car has, should have been changed by now but you must get it checked - if it has locked it will cause major damage to the second gearbox/front diff that takes drive to the rear.

I have the same age Freelander with 270,000km but it is a diesel and that engine is totally reliable.

All I can suggest is that if you want this car - go into it with your eyes wide open. Get it checked by a land rover specialist and never, never, never let it get hot.

The 1.8 petrol Freelanders are cheap for a reason. If it were me I would look at one of the diesel models - the best of the Freelander 1s is the later BMW engined TD4 diesels - but the earlier diesel as I said is virtually bullet proof.

    Cheers
