    oil leak overdrive

I have a 2004 Defender TD5. I had installed a GKN overdrive unit. It has been successful at cutting revs at 110KMH which makes for more enjoyable trips. It does have associated oil leaks. The original supplier has been very supportive and it has been removed twice. The oil leaks were initially around the sandwich plate. It is still dripping fluid and leaving a mess on garage floor. It is inconvenient to take back to the original supplier and have off the road for the repair period. Has anybody had any experience with this type of problem and do they have any suggestions?

In the absence of gkn overdrive owners -

Figure out what is leaking- either 90w oil or atf ( If that's what the overdrive runs on).

There is this thread on fitting instructions
Fitting a GKN overdrive to aDefender - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

and there are a couple of areas that spring to mind that could cause your leak.

    - loose countersunk screws holding the sandwich plate to the TC. ( Solution: Use oil-proof loctite)

    - Contrary to the above thread, not using the LR 'continuous bead and wait 10 mins then assemble' routine ( If you spread the silicone too thin, it is more prone to displace under vibration - refer to the method of joining sump to engine block, and assembly of a TC)

    - Loose outer bolts holding TC to sandwich plate ( Again, use loctite)

    - Blocked oil breather of ODrive.

At least it should point you in the right direction.

Many thanks for your reply to my query. I will refer same to my workshop. I have always had a suspicion that some fluid may be coming out of the breather. Most appreciated.
