    Rough running Disco 2a Td5

    G'Day all,

A few of us were out the back of Healesville today and when I pulled up at at a track junction this afternoon, the whole car started to vibrate. Popped the bonnet and the engine was doing a merry jig and trying to escape from it's mounts.

Shut it down and check the air filter - all good there. Pulled the ECU and checked the plugs - no sign of oil there. Have not pulled the turbo hose yet but ruled out delamination as this is normally accompanied by lots of black smoke and almost no power. MAF sensor appears to be OK as I exchanged it with someone else last week and had no real change in performance. Restart and it ran OK for a minute and then went lumpy again.

The engine is down on power and shudders at take off but then settles down and runs reasonably normally. When you place a load on the engine it starts to get lumpy and once it changes down, settles back into it's stride again. Like I said not as much get up and go as normal but she still running.

Any suggestions on what else I should be looking at?

    TIA.

    Cheers,

    Franz

Sounds like oil in the injector harness. Checking the ECU end is only the worst case. Check the plug on the rocker cover for oil and take the harness out from under there and give it good wash in contact cleaner or something. After that start looking elsewhere if its still misbehaving.

    Hi Franz
Before you drive it any further check the oil in the sump to see if its higher than normal and mixed with diesel. You may have a failed injector seal leaking diesel at high pressure into the piston. The motor can run on its own fumes and self destruct without you being able to shut it down.If you know anybody with a nanocom,it should be able to detect an injector behaving erratically.
Running rough is usually a sign of oil in the harness as Derek stated, check the connector at the LH front of the head,BE CAREFULL NOT TO SNAP THE PLASTIC CLIP,I DID

    check the harness (as mentioned)
check the oil for dieso (as mentioned)
if none of that gives you any joy you may need to check the injector harness itself incase one of the plugs comes loose. if in doubt remove and refit all the harness related plugs.

Good to see you got home OK.

I had this sympton & it was the turbo relief valve - I stand corrected for the incorrect terminology.

From memory it was a cheap fix.

By the way I gave your hand held to Simon.

    Regards

    Thanks Landy Andy.

I did check the oil and it was at the right level. How would one determine if there was fuel in the oil - smell test?

    Cheers,

    Franz

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

OK, just checked the oil - it's about a half a centimetre above the full line on the dipstick. It's still dark in colour and the sniff test dide not reveal any diesel smell. Is there another way of checking for diesel contamination?

I'll check the loom plug under the rocker cover later.

    Cheers,

    Franz

    Hi Franz
    2 ways to check.
Nanocom should pick up that 1 injector is missbehaving,as it shows the balance between all 5,one will be trying to inject heaps more diesel if it isnt sealing against the head.See if anybody nearby can plug their Nanocom in for you if you dont have one.
BlkNiteAus once posted another check to see if an injector seal had failed. It involved filling the fuel tank to the brim and running it with the cap off and watching for air bubbles at the filler neck.If a seal has failed the motor will force combustion gasses into the fuel system the same way a failed head gasket puts combustion gasses into the coolant.Send a PM to Dave for further advice.
At least if its an injector seal its a cheap fix.
Frenchie had another problem with his,the head had cracked allowing diesel to fill the sump, his had been overheated whilst towing.
    GOODLUCK

It could be an injector stuck open. This happened to me the other day. Turned it off, re started and all was fine. I used my Nanocom at the time and found out it was number four stuck open.
Have you tryed some fuel additive/cleaner ?
