'99 TD5 Auto lockup

Yes trev cost was $3850 I suppose it isn't bad for a full recon, and they took the whole box and dice out and put it back.

When you come to a reasonable hill, you should bring it back to 3rd and let it lock up in that gear. More revs and it's not working so hard.
I usually sit around 90-95 with the 2 tonne van just below 2250rpm and with the chip it tends to hold the revs even tho it is working harder.
What happens is the fine bearings inside the auto pack up,the plates in the box start to burn and some-how starts the torque converter plates to glaze and slip.
Haven't explained it quite right but close enough.


Can the Auto ECU be checked with by the Nanocom? If it does I haven't worked out how to do it yet. Any explanitory help on that one would be appreciated.

I think you need to consider if the electronics is up to scratch.No harm in new clutch packs,but a check on the auto ECU may not be a bad idea.
Even if towing a heavy trailer,it should be up to it if working properly.

Hi Tony! all things considered probably not a bad price to have it re-conned.

Ian Ashcroft has replied on here I notice,and he raises the issue with the converter.
Ashcrofts are highly regarded for their modifications.

I think the Nanocom will pick up electronic issues,but not mechanical like you had.

May be you could raise the question with him?

may be totally un-related but I reckon my auto changed much better after a good clean of a filthy MAF.
Towing in 4th on the flat 95kph= 2100rpm. Any hills, I drop it back manually.

Probably is related Russ.I think there is a MAF input to the Auto through the electronics.
In the light of what Ian Ashcroft says you are taking the safe option in manually changing down.

Hi yes the MAF is an input and has effect on the auto sometimes it appears that there is an auto box fault and even though the MAF tests! ok it is often at fault. Regarding the original topic if you shift to 3rd then the torque converter will generate huge amounts of heat which can lead to oil degradation and box failure. If you have the small converter and tow then seriously look at additional cooling. The reason we recommend fitting the 'medium' size converter is two fold less slip therefore less heat generation and much larger clutch plate in the torque converter so less likely so slip/glaze. My Disco (95v8) is doing 2600rpm at 100kph, 2500rpm at 95kph.
It has standard wheel/tyres.

It appears my Disco is revving more than it should, anyone know whats hapening here,
I seem to 400rpm higher than everyone else, and crap fuel comsumption.(LPG)
it changes 1st to 4th and into lock-up at 85kph :confused:

I should have qualified that I when I drop back, I keep it under, or at 80kph.

Ian, I've a 2004 build Disco TD%. Would that not have the medium sized converter?

Don`t forget we are talking about the diesel engine here,Don`t know what the V8 should be reving at.
