    Knocking on start up

    Hi all,
Bugger of a time for problems to occur but that's the way it crumbles.

I have a knock knock knock on start up in my 99 TD5 Disco.

I suspect it is a pulley or belt bearing but thought I'd seek sage from the experts.
It is quite loud - can be heard above the idle, does not sound like metal on metal but maybe metal on plastic or something softer. A medium pitch neither low nor high - kinda like hitting a tyre rim with the the rubber on, dullish but solid. It lasts a short while then goes.

When it occurs, you can feel it through the radiator fan shroud but not the engine shroud. Audible, it seems to be from the lower bowels of the engine bay.

I had a squeal some weeks ago, which I put down to belt squeak but now its gone and this has replaced it hence I think it's a bearing but which one!

How do I isolate it without dismantling the front end?

I'd like to get this resolved before I head off to Melb on Friday

    Thanks
    Ralph

with the engine stone cold take the belt off and start it up.

then if it doesnt do it shut it down and start feeling things by hand.

be warey of the steering pump as it has a drive mech for the water pump (which is behind it) and it may be the drive mech giving out.

    What a PITA!

Got the belt off quite easily (pfaffed around getting it between the fan shroud and crank pulley though).

The tensioner is a bit suspect so I started there.

After the knuckle scraping scream I couldn't budge it!

Novice question, but is the 15mm bolt LH or RH thread? I assumed RH and it is tight as!

I know, easy to look up my Rave disc....if I could find it!

How can I get this thing off!

    Back from Melb!

Well the Disco got us back from Melb but a few probs have presented.

The aforementioned 'knocking' seems to have abated or is reduced but I know that this is not good. I believe it is either the harmonic balancer or maybe an engine mount...why.... because there is an annoyingly significant but not unliveable vibration when at idle. I'll keep investigating. I would assume that if the rubber on a balancer goes, then it would dintergrate well before 200 km? yes?

We developed an ACE issue. The ACE dash light is flashing...no pattern just on and off in its own world. Manual says ON red, stop driving; ON orange be careful but no mention of flashing. I'll keep investigating.

Most concerning issue is a sligt weep of coolant around the bleed screw thingy. Whats a new top hose worth? I'll keep investigating.

And it pulls to the left but I'll keep investigating.

Still, gotta thank her for getting me home.

The TD5 I worked on the other day has a very flexible exhaust joiner under the exhaust manifold, the exhaust pipe was banging on the chassis. I bent a couple of the exhaust hangers to make the exhaust swing clear.

On the same car a bad vibration was traced to the flexible rubber coupling at the back end of the rear tailshaft, it was disintegrating badly. A quick phonecall to TRS and I fitted a used S2 one, problem fixed.
