    99 DefenderTD5 Alternator brushes

has anyone changed the brushes in the alternator?

I need the how to as I checked through the CD and it only details the remove and install of the alternator, not the dis-assembly.
The vac pump concerns me a little otherwise I'd have a crack at it.
The reason is I am getting surging with the gas on once the day warms up.

The installer that did the diesel gas conversion connected his laptop up today and we went for a drive and when the solenoid on the tank stated going off its face accompanied by surging the tacho signal was going off its face as well.
The installer advised that he has tapped into one of the phase windings of the alternator to get the RPM signal. He thinks the brushes are worn causing the erratic signal.
    Thanks

    Yes its super easy.

I have just gone and taken my spare apart for you to show you how its done, You dont need to seperate the vacuum pump from the alternator to do it. You may even be able to do them on the car with patience.

So looking from the back remove the highlighted nuts / screws. You also have to remove the plastic shroud around where the battery cable fits.

    Next pull off aluminium cover

Now undo the 2 screws each side of the brushes and then pull them from the armature.

That's it. The only thing I dont have to hand is the part number for the brushes, but its daft to replace a $900 alternator for the sake of $20 of brushes which are commonly available.

It took me 2 minutes to do that on my bench.
