    TD5 Intercooler core size.

I want to upgrade the intercooler on my td5. What I want to know is what size shall I get. A this point I am looking at core of 550x230x65 which is heaps bigger than the factory one but still leaves plenty of room for air to reach the radiator. I have to modify the pipes to make it fit but that should not be too difficult ,I have friends that will do this for me. The ex UK ones have a core about 550x330x40 which cover the whole radiator but lets air pass through it.

What I really want to know is how wide deep and thick can you go with out making a hash of it and cooking the motor.

Any help would be great. cheers

I don't have a Td5, so I'm not sure of the core sizes and I assume from your pic you are talking about a Defender, but here goes anyway:

What I do know is that the Discovery 2 td5 has a smallish intercooler, shall we say, and that the update D2a has a larger intercooler.

Limitations are the max flow, lag, etc..

Too large will induce lag to the set up.
Too small / restrictive will reduce its effectiveness...

Other limitations are the space between body mounting points...

You do NOT need to modify the pipes (inlet/outlet)...

    38mm core thickness is plenty.

Dont get a bar & plate core either - not good enough...
The best cores are extruded here by Adrad... And have fins internally to help draw heat from the airflow.

The reason I have been interested in the 550x230x65 core size is that it very readily available and subsequently its cheap. About $150. I will need to modify the pipe on the intercooler not the vehicle mainly just to get them pointing in the right direction. It is plate and Bar but I figured it would have to be way better than what is on there now. Is it worth the effort of leave it alone.

No It hasn't been answered already, but thanks!

I have no doubt that there is an ultimate intercooler! I do not doubt that tombie2 knows exactly what hes on about and his input is greatly appreciated. My question is, is the core size and type I mentioned earlier suitable for a td5 defender and is it worth doing performance wise as there are very significant cost benefits. I dont intend spending $2000 or so which is what the bespoke ones cost over here. If i could afford it I would not muck about I would just put the right one in no question. I can get this in the car for about $250. I am going to have a remap done as well and figured it may be worth doing. It may not be the best you get but is it much better than what its got now?

    cheers

    G'day Tombie,
My intercooler is referred to as a bar & plate, but it does have internal fins. Are there some with, and some without internal fins ??

I have the same type of core Murray, in a different surface area. I can tell you NZlandies that mine shows an amazing amount of heat exchange, just by feel the inlet and outlet temps after a caning up a long hill are vastly different I don't have a Td5, and yes there are a few more efficient cores around but I get the $$ factor involved. Mine cost me $400 back when custom jobs were $2k +++

Tombies Td5 ones are a god unit though, and it may well be worth a PM to him, it can cost Waayyy less than what you think.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

I just imported a new intercooler from CXRacing in the States because it's exactly the size I wanted to upgrade the one in my Isuzu County. It only cost AU$233 delivered to my door.
As JC suggests, it doesn't have to cost a fortune, and, for Landy engines, I would be giving local suppliers like Tombie a try as the products they supply should be a 'bolt on' situation.

    Cheers, Murray

NZ - The larger IC's for the likes of Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide sell for around AU$1000. The certainly aren't a heavy item and I had one posted to me for about $40. These are about the dimensions Tombie2 spoke of.

As to effectiveness, if you aren't rechipping it will do a little. If you are rechipping it really improves things and reduces the apparent turbo lag significantly.
