Do I have a turbo problem

When I turn my engine off, for the next few seconds I can hear the turbo spinning to a stop. I don't know whether this has always been there and I havn't noticed it or it is a new noise. Is this normal?

Now being a bit paranoid I an not sure whether I can hear a new noise when turbo boost comes in.

If it is a problem I would suspect it to be a bearing. Can new bearings be fitted to these things by a home mechanic?

It is a 300 TDI with 305,000 on the clock.

The vehicle drives fine, blows no smoke and there is no oil stains anywhere around the turbo to suggest seals.

    Dave,

To examine the condition of the turbine, remove the intake pipe, get a mirror and torch and see if you can get any axial movement on the shaft itself. Radial play to a reasonable level is normal, IE as long as the blades haven't been contacting the housing it is acceptable. ANY axial movement is unacceptable.

It is possible it has reached a point in its life when an overhaul for the core unit is approaching, noises can be as simple as a balancing issue as they can spin at well over 100,000rpm and any degree of wear can and does cause some noise under boost.

The noise on shut down however is unusual, It is worth getting someone with experience to listen to it.

Fan has completely stopped before this other noise.

No because they have to be dynamically rebalanced by grinding the nut in the centre after rebuild.

If the nut and compressor wheel are installed in the original position (mark before removal) then final balance is retained without the need to rebalance.

Keep in mind that this is only final balance, all the components are balanced individually and final balance takes care of the tiny residual which is more related to turbo noise than longevity.
I have both rebuilt turbos without final balancing and swapped compressor wheels on other turbos without any related issues.
My current turbo was done by me over 2 years ago and has been run right off it's compressor map on many occasions since with no issues.

I bet that its not your turbo at all.

I would put money on it being your centrifugal oil filter spinning down. I used to hear mine all the time.

I noticed after replacing a few with standard oil changes that some were louder then others.

If thats what the noise is then its nothing to worry about - infact it just means that the filter is working

I have pulled the hoses off and have found a lot of play in the turbine shaft bushes.

I have yet to have it looked at by a specialist but I rang one yesterday.

I have three options and would like your advice.

Option One, I was quoted $700 to $1500(What this means is $1500) to have it reconditioned if I remove from car.

Two, Second hand. I haven't looked or priced yet. Any one know of any and how much. I am only planning to keep this vehicle for about two more years. Is SH worth the risk

Three. Island 4X4 have them new for 420 pound. I did a conversion to A$ and it was $761. Does anyone here have any idea what this would cost to freight to Au? Are there any other hidden cost when importing?

I do have a Nephew living in the mother country. Would it be any cheaper to get him to buy it and post it?

Any help here would be much appreciated.

My money is also on the centifugal oil filter. Dont even bother thinking its the turbo.
I had the same noise. Thought the turbo was suspect. But when I changed the centrifugal oil filter the noise was gone.
Some aftermarket ones have a slightly smaller brass bush and this allows the filter to contact the housing as the oil pressure drops.
It will dissapear with a change of filter.
